The USGS Personnel Office
The USGS TSP Calculator
Welcome to the USGS TSP Calculator!
The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) is a key part of
your total retirement benefits package, particularly if you are in
the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS.) Employees are often
curious what the total value of their TSP investments will
be when they retire. However, TSP is an investment; the
amount you invest and the rates of return on your investment will
change unpredictably over time. Because of this it is not possible
to know exactly how much money you will have in your TSP account
when you retire. You can, however, calculate an estimated
guess based on assumptions about how much you plan to
contribute to TSP, and the interest you assume the various TSP
funds will earn over time.
That's exactly what this program is designed to
do: provide a "guestimate" of the value of your TSP investments at
any given time.
This Calculator Will:
- Allow you to enter a summary of your current situation, including
your salary, amount contributed to TSP, percent contributed to each fund,
fund account balances and contribution percentages for each TSP fund.
- Include an annual salary increase to account for anticipated pay
comparability salary increases.
- Let you change the variables used to calculate your TSP balance at
any time in the future. The program lets you simulate:
- Changes in salary (such as promotions, Within-Grades, etc.)
- Changes in the rates of return of each fund
- Interfund transfers
- Changes in the percent of salary contributed
- Changes in how much of your total TSP contribution goes to each fund
- Automatically calculate the government matching funds for FERS employees
- Keep track of the annual IRS limit on TSP contributions
- Calculate
estimates using the "I" and "S" funds
Calculate the effects of "Catch-up" contributions on your TSP balance
This Calculator Will Not:
- Calculate the effects of TSP Loans on your account balance
How to Get Started
Before you begin you
should gather your current account information together so that
you'll be ready to input such information as your current fund
balances, total contribution amount, fund contribution amount,
current rates of return, etc.
- The most up-to-date information on your account can be found at
TSP's
Thriftline, which updates all of your balances and account
information once per month.
- Alternatively, you can find out your account information from a
recent TSP Participant Statement. These are mailed to all
particpants in May and late November each year.
- Your current contribution amounts, plus your salary and retirement system,
are available on any recent Leave and Earnings Statement (LES).
Once you have this
information, you're ready to begin using this Calculator.
